SRI RAMAKRISHNA BHAJAN SAMAJ (Regd.)
BIRTH - GROWTH - EXPANSION
Sri Ramakrishna Bhajan Samaj was formed on the auspicious day of Vijaya Dasami on 1st October 1968 with the merger of Sri Krishna Gana Sabha and Rama Bhajan Samaj, two organisations which were catering to the religious and spiritual aspirations of the community for many years in Goregaon area, a western suburb in Mumbai. In May 1967 His Holiness Abhinava Vidyaateertha Swamigal, Sankaracharya of Sringeri Sharada Peetham visited Goregaon when active members of both these organisations came together to offer him a befitting welcome and accordingly decided to bring the religious activities of both these organizations under one umbrella under the name of Sri Ramakrishna Bhajan Samaj.
Initially the Samaj used to conduct regular Saturday Bhajans at the premises of Vivek Vidyalaya , (another educational organization founded by the community under Vivek Education Society in Goregaon) and in the houses of devotees, apart from celebrating Sri Rama Navami, Janmashtami, Thai Poosam, Skanda Shashti and Sastha Pooja on a very limited scale. With the spontaneous participation and help from the religious minded devotees, the Samaj was able to acquire a piece of land at Bangur Nagar, Goregaon in the year 1973. The Bhoomi Pooja for the Samaj building was performed at the Holy Hands of H.H. Sri Sankaracharya of Dwaraka Peetham. His Holiness Shri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, during his first Vijaya Yatra to Mumbai, camped at Goregaon and performed Sri Chandramouliswaraswami Pooja to shower His blessings for the success of this endeavor.
While toying with the idea of building a Bhajan Mutt, a devotee presented a beautiful idol of Lord Vinayaka, which the Samaj housed in a small temporary structure in the premises during 1981 and initiated daily poojas. In 1983, the Managing Committee and active members of the Samaj took a decision to construct a temple in the premises and to install therein the presiding deity Lord Sri Ramachandra Moorthy with his consort Sri Seetadevi, Lakshmana and Aanjaneya as well as a separate sannidhanam for Aanjaneya. The installation of the Lord Vinayaka, as well as the installation/consecration of all the deities was performed by Br.Sri Ganesha Shastrigal of South India Bhajan Samaj, Matunga, Mumbai.
In September 1985 for the first time in the Western Suburb of Mumbai, the Samaj conducted Shri Maharudra Mahayagnam, in which a large number of learned Vaideekas from all over India participated.
During the year 1992, In deference to the wishes of devotees, the Managing Committee decided for the installation and consecration of Nava Grahas. Meanwhile, the single storied structure of the temple was expanded with the addition of 1st and second floors, which was completed in 1998.
Raja Gopuram During the year 1999, the construction of a magnificent Rajaqgopuam, which adorns the entrance of the temple, now identified as Sri Ram Mandir was completed. This was followed by Mahakumbhabhisekam in the year 2000, in the benign presence of Jagadguru Sri Sanakarcharya H.H. Jayaendra Saraswati Swamigal and H.H. Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. 65 Vedic scholars under the leadership of Vaideeka Samrat Br.Sri Ganesha Sasatrigal participated in the performance of this Yagnam. This is indeed a milestone and great achievement in the history of the Samaj.
With the enormous progress over the years, the Samaj has been conducting various religious functions, notably Sri Ramanavami, Sastha Preeti, Navaratri, Pratishta Day celebrations, etc., in a befitting manner, apart from Gansh Chathurthi, Gokulashtami, Thaipoosam, Skanda Shashti, Sivaratri, besides regular Saturday Bhajans, Thirupugazh bhajan on Shashti days and Bhagavati Seva in the month of Aadi.
